Tilak Raj, who allegedly drove a truck over Jyoti who was found dead in Panchkula on the morning of November 22, confessed to the crime on Thursday, a day after the police had arrested him.
The police said that Raj drove the truck over Jyoti, who hailed from Bhunga village in Hoshiarpur
district of Punjab, on the directions of his employer, Paramjit Singh alias Pumma, who is still absconding. In his confession to the police, Raj said that the other accused - Gurmeet, Paramjit and Ram Kumar Chaudhary, the MLA from Doon constituency in Himachal Pradesh - were inside the truck when an unconscious Jyoti was crushed under its wheels.
Raj claimed that his employer had phoned him and asked him to bring the truck (HP12A7738) to Sector 21 where Jyoti was lying unconscious on a road. He then asked Raj to drive the truck over her. The court has now remanded Raj in five-day police custody to help in the recovery of his mobile phone from Bodh village in Kangra district.
Jyoti was allegedly attacked by Chaudhary, Gurmeet, Paramjit and Dharampal, inside a car after which she fell unconscious. In the struggle, the hair of the accused got stuck in her sweater. Though the police had recovered the car in which Jyoti was assaulted, Chaudhary had, the police claimed, removed most evidence. A source in the police said the truck would be recovered soon.
Gurmeet and Dharampal also arrested
The police have arrested Gurmeet and Dharampal, relatives of Doon legislator Ram Kumar Chaudhary, on Thursday and produced them before a court. The two have been remanded in five-day police custody.
The police have also moved an application in which they have requested the court to allow them to collect hair samples from Gurmeet and Dharampal. Both the accused did not object to the application and the samples will be taken in the presence of a doctor or a medical board. The police will produce Chaudhary in the court on Friday to seek the extension of his police remand.
The police now want to recover the mobile phones of Dharampal (9816046155) and Gurmeet (9816900155) from Almora in Uttrakhand and Goa, respectively. The police claimed that the mobile phones of the two were with them at the time of the crime.
