Allegedly harassed by her in-laws for dowry and being childless even two years after marriage, a Sham Churasi resident set herself on fire on Thursday. She has been admitted to the civil hospital here in a critical condition.
In her statement before a judicial magistrate, Mandip Kaur, 22, said that she was ill treated by her husband Rakesh Kumar and mother-in-law Rani for not bringing adequate dowry from her parents and not bearing a child even after two years of marriage.  On Thursday, when she was abused once again, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire.

Bulhowal SHO Harneel Singh said that the mother-son duo was not at home, when Mandip attempted suicide. It was her neighbours, who called the 108 ambulance to take her to hospital.

The SHO added that the accused Rakesh Kumar, who had returned from Muscat, just two days ago had claimed that Mandip was uspet over another matter. A case under Section 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting wife to cruelty) of the PC had been registered against Rakesh and his mother and former had been arrested.
