Almost 14 lakh of 1.22 crore registered voters in Delhi are missing, verification of roll by booth officers has revealed.

Though their names exist in the summary electoral roll — published earlier this week — the verification drive has found more than 14 lakh voters missing from their residential addresses given to the election office.

Though many of these ‘missing’ voters would actually be tenants who would have shifted to different addresses, a senior electoral officer said that 50% of them, however, may even turn out to be fake voters.

A senior election officer said the department would now serve them a notice and if they failed to appear, their names would be struck off the voters list.

There are about 7.21 lakh voters whose photos are missing from the roll and about five lakh of them have never got their photo ID cards made. “We believe that they are fake voters. We will start an exercise to weed out fake voters between February 1 and March 31,” he said.

“To verify their existence, we will first send a notice to these voters to furnish their photographs so that we can update our electoral roll. Names of all such voters who would fail to respond to our notice will be struck off the voters list,” an official said.
