Fully aware of the huge debt burden looming over the state , chief minister Mamata Banerjee continued her slew of promises on Saturday, claiming at a public gathering in Nadia that the government would purchase land and donate it to the landless poor if needed under the Nija Bhumi Nija Griha
“I will make sure that not a single woman is forced to sleep on the road. In the next five years we will make sure that each family has shelter. If we run out of land, we will buy land and donate it to poor farmers,” she said at Haringhata, Nadia.
However, she stepped short of saying how the government could afford such a scheme at a time of such financial crisis. According to government estimates, there are nearly 6 lakh landless in rural Bengal.
The CM also laid the foundation stone of at least 13 other projects, inaugurated a higher primary Alchiki school, distributed pattas (deeds) to nearly 2,500 farmers and cycles to village girls. This was her third visit to the district after she took charge in May 2011.
Mamata was quick to project the sorry state of the state coffer soon after the announcement. “We requested the Union government to give a three years tax moratorium. I told them that the money, which you are taking away every month, could provide jobs for at least 5 lakh unemployed youths. At present every child born in the state does so with a debt burden of R26,000,” she said.
Lashing out at the CPI(M), Congress and BJP in one go, she said, “They are different faces of the same creature. I have all the details as to which party is funding whom and I will expose them before the panchayat elections.”
Mamata alleged that there are CPI(M) cadres in government offices trying to thwart development that the Trinamool started.
“I would urge the people to identify these CPI(M) cadres. But do not beat them up. Just identify them and bring it to our notice. Wee will investigate,” she said.
Claiming that the state government would take stern actions against those committing crime against women, she urged local youths to protect women.“They are your mothers and sisters. Protect them,” she said.
