The city witnessed a dip in mercury on Saturday as the temperature dropped to 12.2 degrees Celsius, 6.3 degrees below normal. The fall in the minimum temperature was caused by cold winds coming from the north, said weather officials.

"The chill in the city is due to cold breeze from the western disturbance and northerly winds," said VK Rajeev, director, western region, IMD.

Western disturbance is a term used to describe an extratropical originating in the Mediterranean that brings sudden winter rain and snow to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent.

The city is likely to feel the chill for the next couple of days. "In the next two to three days, the minimum temperature could fall to 11 degrees Celsius," said Rajeev.
