In the last 30 months, the courts across the state have managed to dispose of 60 lakh cases, reducing the pendency to 29.77 cases across the state, mainly because of several innovative measures to reduce pendency.

According to statistics with the state judiciary, on July 2010, as many as 41.35 lakh cases were pending in the state. Also, 48.51 lakh new cases were filed across the state in the last 30 months. 

The Bombay high court had then revised norms for disposal of cases for the judicial officers, whereby the old cases were to be given preference. Further, an alternative dispute redressal mechanism was strengthened across the state to clear the state's huge backlog.

All the courts across the states have organised mega "Lok Adalats", which is part of the alternative dispute redressal mechanism, in the last two years, and managed to dispose of many cases, often on the same day. In 2011, as many as 1,23, 450 cases were disposed of in one day in a mega Lok Adalat, while in 2012, as many as 2,40,179 cases were disposed of in a day across the state through the alternate dispute resolution (ADR) forum. The sources revealed that the courts at various levels have been asked to organise Lok Adalats at regular intervals for speedy justice.

By the end of July 2011, the state had managed to set up 36 mediation centres across the state to deal with civil litigations.
