Panjab University (PU) in its syndicate meeting scheduled for January 27 will take call on the eligibility criteria of individuals applying for the post of professors and assistant professors to the university. If the recommendations of the committee to look into the matter are approved, the university while hiring will consider the quality research work of an applicant.


Considering the recommendations of a committee formed recently, it was discussed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has said that while filling post of professors, the universities must ensure that the applicant has rich experience in research also may be at national level. It has been decided by the committee that while making an appointment for the post of professor calculations will be done on the basis of research students under him and on thesis submitted by students.

Similarly, while appointing an assistant professor it will be ensured that the applicant has students doing research under him/her for at least a period of one year. If these recommendations of the committee are approved, the candidates with quality research will be preferred over those with quantity research.

In another important decision, the syndicate would be will finalising committees for periodic inspection to 101 affiliated colleges of PU.

The house would be forming certain guidelines based on which these committees would have to submit their reports within a stipulated time period.

It also came to the knowledge of the university authorities that colleges were being favoured and the issue was also discussed during the senate meeting held on January 20.

The syndicate would be forming a committee with an aim to checking deficiencies with different colleges and act stringently during inspections.

Raising the bar for those LLM students who want to improve their results, if the house agrees only those students with 60% aggregate will be allowed to go in for improvement examinations. Earlier, those with 50% marks were eligible for improvement examinations. The decision was approved during the meeting of board of studies.

Meanwhile, giving a boost to the students from Jammu and Kashmir, the university shall be adopting the directions of UGC where it has asked the university and its affiliated colleges to reserve two seats for students from J&K who shall be granted a special fellowship.

Cracking the whip on students using unfair means, out of about 100 cases which came to the light during the examination last year, the house will decide on the fate of four such students. The house will decide on debarring four students who have used impersonators during graduation examination in the last academic session.

Aadhaar cards must for students seeking financial aid
According to directions of the Punjab government, Panjab University will be putting in place Aadhaar cards as identification proofs to be produced by students seeking financial aid, scholarships or other stipends from the state government. The Punjab government has directed PU that only students with Aadhaar cards as identification proofs shall be entertained for such financial benefits starting new academic session.
