Illegal call centres mushrooming in the city have made life tough not only for the British but for Delhi Police too.

After the British High Commission filed separate complaints, claiming that thousands of its countrymen have been duped of several millions of pounds by these call centres, the Delhi Police have swung into action. What came out of the investigations is astounding.

More than 10,000 fake call centres are operating out of Delhi and are committing crimes such as cheating and fraud every day. Moreover, these fake call centres call up nearly 2.5 lakh UK residents every day with nefarious motives, police said.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Delhi Police has now decided to crack down on such fake centres.

It will soon launch a special drive to check the veracity of all call centres operating in the Capital. 

On Monday, its Crime Branch cracked another such case and arrested five people.

"They had duped several UK residents and earned R1 crore. They would pose as employees of banks and other financial institutions in the UK and promise them of providing unsecured loans as well as payment protection insurance (PPI)," said SBS Tyagi, DCP (crime).

Those arrested have been identified as Anshuman Srivastava, 26 - who was the mastermind -  and his four call centre employees, Pawan Singh, 21, Sumit Kumar, 20, Ashu Khan, 23, and Amit Singh, 27. Srivastava had named the fake call centre "Wisdom Calling" and operated from a rented accommodation in Shakti Vihar near Rohini.
