To ensure the sale of quality fertilisers and approved pesticides and fungicides to farmers by dealers, the Tarn Taran district agriculture department has cancelled the licences of three dealers and put another seven on notice.
Disclosing this at a meeting of the district agriculture
productivity committee chaired by deputy commissioner HS Pabla here on Wednesday, chief agriculture officer (CAO) Sukhdev Singh Sandhu said the action was taken during a special campaign carried out by him and his team.
The DC said that during the quality control campaign, 170 samples of fertilisers were collected and tested in government laboratories. Of these, one sample failed the quality test. Likewise, of the 143 samples of chemical sprays that were tested, nine failed the test.
"The licences of three dealers have been cancelled, while the remaining seven have been issued notices to explain as to why their licences should not be cancelled," the DC said.
1.85 lakh hectares under wheat in Tarn Taran
It was disclosed in the meeting that this season, wheat had been sown in an area of 1,85,000 hectares in the district. Out of this area, seed replacement under the National Food Security Mission was carried out in 10,255 hectares so as to get a better yield than last year.
Under the Mission, 500 tonnes of zinc sulphate was provided to farmers at 50% subsidy to improve the health of the soil in certain parts of the district.
The DC also reviewed the progress made under the National Horticulture Mission to encourage farmers to sow fruits and vegetables instead of following the traditional wheat-paddy cycle. The DC said subsidies were provided to farmers for setting up net houses for vegetables. Besides, subsidies have also been provided for purchase of various farm implements. Special steps are being taken to encourage fisheries and the area under it is bound to go up this year, he said.
The DC also reviewed the progress of various dairy farming schemes, including subsidies for buying high milk-yielding cattle and setting up of modern dairy units.
