Goods worth crores were burnt to ashes during a fire that broke out at Indira Hosiery in the Sunder Nagar area on Tuesday evening. The fire continued till Wednesday morning. The fire was so devastating that the fire brigade officials were not able to control it for more than 15 hours. The fire broke at the hosiery at 9 pm on Tuesday and was controlled by noon. However, by then goods worth nearly Rs. 3 crore were burnt.

The exact reason for the fire was still not known and officials would conduct investigations at the factory on Thursday.

"Though there are claims that the fire took place due to short circuit, we will investigate whether it was short circuit or human error," assistant divisional fire officer Bhupinder Singh said.

He said besides nine fire brigades, help of two more from Khanna and Samrala was sought. "It was a devastating fire that caused heavy losses to the hosiery unit. As the fire was brought under control on Wednesday, we will be able to investigate for the exact cause on Thursday. It can be due to negligence or human error," Singh added.

Forty officials of the MC continued to work throughout the night to bring the fire under control. "There was no support of water anywhere nearby the unit as a result it, fire brigades took a lot of time to be refilled and sent to the spot," Singh added.

When the watchman of the factory saw smoke emanating from the unit he raised the alarm and fire brigade reached the spot after sometime.

The fire broke out on the first floor of the four-storey building after which it engulfed the entire building.
