The 14th Dalai Lama missed his visit to St Xavier’s College for the annual Malhar fest, but made amends by visiting it on Wednesday.   The spiritual leader, speaking on ‘Ethics: Educating heart and mind’, told students that education and technology by itself did not guarantee happiness.

“Today everyone wants to be happy and successful, but many fail to understand that technology and materialism will not bring or create happiness,” he said. “We must look at reality from a holistic view. Only warm-heartedness and compassion helps to create inner peace.”

The Dalai Lama, citing the 9/11 US terror attacks, spoke about the modern education system, saying, “Sometimes the modern education structure fails to teach ethos and values. People with advanced education and intelligence tend to become troublemakers and use their intelligence to bring about hatred.”

He believed that the only alternative was secular education. “We should learn to use our common sense and experience rather than always sticking to scientific findings. This is the only way to live and learn new things in life,” he said.

The Dalai Lama also claimed that promoting harmony was one of his commitments towards humanity.

Two students from the college gifted the Dalai Lama a sketched portrait of his face. “I was completely spellbound by his presence and his speech. His way of looking at life and dealing with various situations is worth learning from,” said Shikha Kale, a final year arts student.
