The streets of East Delhi will soon don a sleek look with the East Corporation finalizing the process of installing benches, toilets, modern street lights, advertisement poles and information panels on them.
According to the plan, 120 stretches will be taken up and made commuter
"The idea has come from the roads near the Games village which were done up before the Commonwealth Games. They have all kinds of facilities for pedestrians such as benches and good streetlights. We hope to emulate it on the other streets as well," said a senior official of the corporation.
Some of the major stretches that will benefit from the exercise include, New Ashok Nagar, Patparganj, Nirman Vihar, Vasusndhra Enclave, Ghazipur, Mayur Vihar and Dilshad Garden etc.
The standing committee has cleared the proposal for 527 benches, 486 trash bins, 287 advertisement panels, 528 information panels and, most importantly, 64 public conveniences, most of which will be for women.
"We will build more toilets for women, since such facilities are scarce for them at present. These public conveniences will be built near commercial places and markets where footfall is more.
Unlike many toilets that use the front of the structure for advertising, our toilets will have doors facing the street so that women feel safer," said Municipal Commissioner SS Yadav.
He added that the project will have no financial implication on the corporation since it will be implemented on a public-private partnership (PPP) model, in which the contractor will generate income through advertisements.
The contractor will run the project for a total of 10 years after signing of the contract and will share the profits from the advertisements with the municipal body.
"The project will be implemented on all major roads irrespective of whether it belongs to the PWD or the East Corporation," added Yadav. The tendering procedure is expected to get over by next month.
