New MoonNew Moon, the much awaited sequel to the vampire romance Twilight has received the third biggest weekend opening in the history of Hollywood, raking in USD 140 at the box office.

Starring teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson as the lovelorn vampire Edward Cullen, the film took USD 118.1 million at the international box office, gathering a worldwide opening total of USD 258.8 million, a magazine reported.

The film had earlier broken the record of highest grossing film by raking in a spectacular USD 72.7 million on its opening day, taking over the mantle from The Dark Knight, which had made USD 67.2 million.

The opening day for New Moon posted more than a 100 per cent gain over the opening collection of Twilight which made USD 36 million when it was released a year ago.

The film which also stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner revolves around the love triangle between a vampire, a human and a werewolf.
