For stronger Indo-Russian ties, Moscow must set its house in order
The editorial Friends only in official circles (Our Take, December 26) rightly states that Indo-Russian ties are not as strong or meaningful as they were in the 1980s. I agree that the shadow of the Soviet model is restricting the growth of the relationship. The Russian government's inability to develop an entrepreneurial economy has made that nation depend heavily on India for business. So it's important for Russian President Vladimir Putin to put his country's economy back on track, as doing so will go a long way towards strengthening the bilateral relationship.

The blame for rape lies with us
With reference to Namita Bhandare's article A tipping point for change (Another Day, December 22), my heart goes out to the Delhi gangrape victim. The blame, I believe, lies with us. In India, men only care for women of their families and treat others as objects of desire. So the next time a woman gets raped anywhere in India, instead of blaming the State, we must ask ourselves what are we doing to stop men from disrespecting women.

II
It's surprising that so many rape cases are being reported from all parts of the country daily. This shows that the state governments and the police force have not learned any lessons from the recent nation-wide protests against the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus on December 16. The rising number of rapes reinforces the need for stricter rape laws since there is a need to instil fear in the minds of potential rapists.
