It has been more than five years since Aarushi Talwar and her family servant Hemraj were murdered in flat No L-32 of Jal Vayu Vihar in Noida but the incident seems to have left some neighbours and other domestic helps spooked from using the stairs that lead to the terrace.

While Aarushi’s body was found inside the apartment on May 15, 2008 Hemraj’s was found on the terrace a day later.

There have been no reports of any untoward incident having taken place since then.

But there is an air of fear or reluctance surrounding many other residents of the building who avoid the apartment’s terrace. Most were tightlipped about the issue, few chose to speak up anonymously.

However, the new occupants of L-32, Tanvir Ali and his family, seem unfazed with bizarre claims from the locals. “I have a family of six. We have been staying in this house for the last four years but we haven’t faced any problems yet. We don’t believe in ghosts either,” said Ali who is privately employed.

Ali, who hails from Bareilly, earlier resided in Sector 34 and had read about Aarushi’s killing in the newspapers. Despite the sensationalism that surrounded the incident, he decied to move into the Talwars’ flat.

A cook who works in L-block claimed of a disturbing silence that haunted her. “In the beginning, I was very scared of coming here. The thought of working in a building where the murders took place gave me the shivers. Residents have written ‘Om’ on the wall of terrace where Hemraj was found. I have got used to it but I still can’t gather enough courage to go to the terrace,” she said.

Another resident said that despite many attempts, some bloodstains on the way to the terrace could not be removed.

Two neem trees had been planted in memory of Aarushi and Hemraj in a park close to the apartments in 2008.

When some people had tried removing it, residents of Jal Vayu Vihar stopped them, warning of more unfortunate events if they did it.
