The lavatory of Guru Nanak Dev hospital here became the escape route for another undertrial, who had been admitted in the hospital for treatment of an ailment. Undertrial Vikramjit Singh, an inmate of the Tarn Taran jail who was brought here some days ago, managed to escape on Tuesday through the toilet of the hospital after giving the police personnel guarding him a slip.

The Amritsar city police have booked Vikramjit Singh and three head constables of the Punjab police, identified as Makhtool Singh, Angrej Singh and Randhir Singh, of the Tarn Taran Police under sections 222/223/224 of IPC in a case registered at Civil Lines police station on the complaint of ASI Gurgian Singh of Police Lines, Tarn Taran.

The ASI said that at around 4.00 pm on Tuesday when he went to check the guard at the hospital, he found that the undertrial had run away from the hospital on the pretext of using the toilet.

"The rest of the accused (3 head constables) also ran after him," he said. ASI Jaspal Singh of Majitha Road police station said that the matter is being investigated and efforts are being made to arrest the absconding accused.

In the past also, a number of undertrials have managed to escape through the lavatory in the hospital. According to the police, one of the doors in the bathroom has a broken ventilator and the accused often escape through that.

Earlier in March, an undertrial, identified as Sammi of Bihar, had also made the excuse of going to the toilet and managed to escape after hitting the guard on the forehead and making him unconscious.
