Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa of the Congress, on Friday, visited the family of the 29-year-old married woman who was gangraped by seven persons on the night of January 11 in Ghukla village near Kahnuwan, and expressed solidarity with them. He appreciated the boldness with which the victim brought the crime to the notice of the police.

Launching a frontal attack on the SAD-BJP government in Punjab, Bajwa said that there was a total failure of law and order in the state. "By using unfair means in the last assembly elections, the SAD-BJP alliance has managed to come to power again, but it has failed to understand that it has some responsibility towards the people of Punjab," he said.

The Congress MP said that perhaps SAD president and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and his brother-in-law Bikram Singh Majithia, a cabinet minister, were under the impression that they need not bother about the general public as they can win elections by using muscle and money power.

"Perhaps Sukhbir and Majithia think that they can retain power again by using their goons and money. So they do not care about people's welfare. The root of the problem lies in the patronisation of criminals by the SAD leadership. The police do not have the courage to lay hands on the criminals being protected by the ruling party leaders," he said.

Citing an example, Bajwa said that around 100 youths of Qadian daily went to Tughalwal village to purchase smack, but there was no one to take action against the drug peddler who enjoyed the patronage of a powerful ruling party leader.

He said the judiciary should come forward and take the initiative to curb crime. He praised the Hoshiarpur court for awarding punishment in a rape case in just eight days of trial. "Prompt justice should be delivered in the case of this rape victim, too," he demanded.
