Chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Tuesday held a meeting with Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) officials. On Monday, she had charged the AIT and government with delaying floating of tenders for the works sanctioned for the development of Amritsar (east) constituency and siphoning funds meant for the development of the city.

She even threatened to hold a demonstration if things did not fall in place soon. The AIT officials assured Dr Sidhu that works of Amritsar (east) would be carried out on priority basis. "Today they will invite tenders and works will start in due course," she said.

A few months ago, Dr Sidhu had alleged that her MP husband Navjot Singh Sidhu was feeling suffocated as the projects introduced by him were being scuttled.

Stating that during elections deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had promised Rs 100 crores for the development of east constituency, Dr Sidhu said that funds amounting to Rs 10 crore had been sanctioned under section 69 (A) for various development works mainly concerned with the provision of basic civic amenities here.

"However, the AIT is yet to float tenders for the development of the area, citing one flimsy reason after another," said an annoyed Dr Sidhu, while talking to HT.

Dr Sidhu said that she and the councillors in her constituency were constantly out on the roads to identify and resolve the problems being faced by the residents of the area, but were harried at the nonchalance of the AIT and the government towards the development of the constituency.

AIT chairman Sandeep Rishi said that works for three constituencies, including Amritsar (east), had been sanctioned but the tenders were yet to be floated.

"The AIT has not more than Rs 90 crores in hand, whereas all these projects cost approximately Rs 350 crores. There is a financial crunch at present, which will be overcome through sale of properties," he said.
