Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) received a major grant of Rs 26.31 crore under the 12th plan from merged schemes along with an additional R10 crore for non-NET fellowship.

During the first year of the 12th-plan period, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had released the plan grant on ad-hoc basis, vice-chancellor AS Brar said here on Tuesday.

Based on the availability of funds from the union government, the UGC has approved the tentative allocation amounting to Rs 26.31 crore, Brar said. He also said the additional Rs 10 crore was also approved, as the UGC had declared the GNDU a "university with potential for excellence".

This additional amount will be allocated for the non-NET fellowships for MPhil and PhD. students.
Brar also spoke of the Rs-3-crore grants, which the GNDU got recently from the DST-PURSE programme for the development of infrastructure in science and technology. Another grant of Rs 10 crore has also been received from the ministry of human resource and development (MoHRD) for the development of technical education.

Earlier, the UGC tagged the GNDU a centre with potential for excellence and gave it a grant of R50 crore for improving infrastructure then. It brings the GNDU into the top 10 universities of India.
