BJP national vice-president and former Punjab minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla on Saturday demanded that the state government to get the reference to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale above the entrance to the Operation Bluestar memorial' in Golden Temple "erased".

"It is a clear violation of the SGPC directions or assurances given to the nation that it will be a simple memorial with no reference to anyone. The government should direct the SGPC to remove it," she told Hindustan Times.

The BJP leader claimed that such memorials "only create a rift in society" and give vent to communal feelings. These structures could also threaten communal harmony and disturb the peace in the state, the former minister added.

"If at all a memorial had to be constructed, it should have been to the 25,000-odd victims of terrorism in Punjab and the 4,000-odd security personal who sacrificed their lives while combating extremists. It should be a reflection on the harm terrorism did to Punjab so that the future generations know the dangers of terrorism," Chawla added.

Laxmi Kanta was also critical of the SGPC's move to put up a board in the Golden Temple 'parikrama' detailing the history of Operation Bluestar. "A shrine like the Golden Temple is no place for reopening old wounds," she said while asking the SGPC to get the board removed.
