A day after Qadian BJP leader was shot in the leg and his friend, a Youth Akali leader, assaulted by three dozen persons in a crowded market here, Batala police claimed the arrest of six persons suspected to be involved in the incident.

Batala SSP Tulsi Ram said that police parties raided the possible hideouts of suspects and arrested Montu Masih, Billa, Bhatu, Neeta, Laddi, and Satnam Singh, adding that remaining absconding accused would be arrest soon.

Earlier, on Friday night, on the complaint of Qadian BJP leader Kamal Joyti, a case was registered under Sections 307, 324, 323, 382, 341, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC and 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act against prime accused Jarnail Singh Mahal, his sons Amar Iqbal Singh Mahal and Harpreet Singh Mahal, Mantu Masih, Neeta, Jinda, Bhagat Singh, Satnam Singh, Laddi, Subeg Singh, Billa and 12 unidentified persons.

Jarnail, a former Akali councillor and president of Qadian municipal council, had opposed SAD leader Sewa Singh Sekhwan in the last assembly election.

It was learnt that about six months back, Mahal's relatives Bhatu and Montu Masih were booked for allegedly attacking Kamal Joyti's brother. Initially, police had allegedly resisted registration of the case due to strong political links of Jarnail Singh with senior akali leaders.

Meanwhile, all the arrested accused have been remaned in two- day police custody by a local court.
