Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa on Sunday claimed that the proposed amendment regarding the imposition of wealth tax on agricultural land was in the process of being withdrawn.

He pointed to the meeting of Congress MPs from Punjab with party chief Sonia Gandhi and finance minister P Chidambaram on the wealth tax issue.

“We impressed upon our leadership the need not to go ahead with the imposition of the tax as it would affect a large number of farmers in Punjab. Our leadership's response was very positive and an assurance was given to us that the interests of the farmers would be kept in mind,” he said.

Bajwa was addressing a gathering at Lidder village at the 'bhog' ceremony held on the 26th death anniversary of Sant Singh Gill, a former Congress MLA from Beas and father of former legislator Jasbir Singh Dimpa.

The Punjab Congress chief said that it was only his party that had always stood by the people, including the farming community.

Criticising the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for its proposed 'dharna' against the wealth tax on May 2, Bajwa said that this was nothing but “cheap gimmick” to claim credit. The Akalis have always resorted such gimmicks in the past to get political mileage, he added.

“The Akalis are aware of our meeting with our leaders in Delhi on the wealth tax issue and the assurance given to us. Now all they want is to claim credit by telling the people that the tax was withdrawn because of their threat to stage a dharna,” he added.

The PPCC chief paid rich tributes to Sant Singh who fell to terrorist bullets in 1986. He lauded the role of his family in fighting terrorists and not succumbing to their threats.

“Only the Congress and communist leaders dared to resist the terrorist. The Akalis were hand in glove with them and chief minister Parkash Singh Badal used to go and attend the 'bhog' ceremonies of slain militants and offer 'siropas' to their family members,” Bajwa alleged.

Others present on the occasion included Dimpa, MLA Sukhjinder Randhawa and other senior leaders Harpartap Singh Ajnala and Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lalli.
