Members of the 'Gurkirat Katal Sangarsh Samiti' ended their chain hunger strike at Verka on Friday night after Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh assured the local residents that the 14-month-old murder case will be solved in the next 20 days.
The hunger strike was to demand justice from the police which had failed to solve the murder of 10-year-old Gurkirat. The boy went missing in Verka on November 16, 2012 when he was playing with his friends close to his house.
His highly decomposed dead body was recovered a couple of days later from a lane at the back of his house.
The police commissioner visited the hunger strike site on the persuasion of Raj Kumar Verka, vice-chairman, National Commissions for Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes and Congress MLA from Amritsar West.
The MLA along with former MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma was present there.
Aulakh appealed to the protesters to end their strike while assuring them he will leave no stone unturned to bring the accused before the law. He sought 20 days time from the protesters, which included the parents of Gurkirat.
“If the murder is not solved in the next 20 days, you can restart your protest. I joined here just four months ago and had gone for training for one-and-a-half month,” Aulakh said.
Raj Kumar Verka told Aulakh that the police had not taken the case seriously. He expressed surprise that the police did not have even a single clue in the murder case.
In the past 14 months, the police worked on various angles but failed to come up with any results. The enmity angle was also taken into account but this also did not yield results as the victim’s family was said to have good relations with their relatives and local residents. A few youths were rounded-up on suspicion but were let off later on.
In November last year, voices demanding justice in the case grew louder. Verka residents held a candlelight procession and staged dharnas in front of the police station. The victim’s family has also moved the Punjab and Haryana high court for a CBI inquiry.
