A young woman of Tung Bala village who was allegedly set afire by two women neighbours over dumping of garbage in front of their houses, succumbed to her burn injuries on Wednesday. The grieving kin of deceased Rita (22) accused two policemen of demanding Rs 1 lakh to get her post-mortem done.

The woman breathed her last at the hospital where she had been admitted for treatment. The incident had occurred on June 22. The police had booked two women identified as Darshna and Anita, both residents of Majitha Road, under sections 307, 34 IPC in a case registered against them at Sadar Police Station. The police have also added section 302 IPC.

Angered by the demand for money by cops, the relatives of Rita blocked the traffic on Majitha Road for well over three hours. David Masih, husband of the deceased, did not only charge the police with demanding money to get the post mortem done, but also with abstaining from arresting the accused women.

He added that several days had passed since the incident, but no arrests had been made in the case. The deceased woman's kin have warned of blocking traffic on Bhandari Bridge if the accused are not arrested at the earliest.

The demonstration was lifted after assurances by A S Pawar, ADCP II and Joga Singh, SHO, Sadar Police Station, who visited the spot that action would be taken against the accused women. Pawar further said that the charges of demanding money leveled by the woman's kin on the cops too would be probed.

"The police have conducted raids at different places, but the accused could not be arrested as they are absconding. A case was registered against the accused soon after the incident and section 302 IPC has been added too," he said. He added that efforts were being made to trace out and arrest the accused. Pawar maintained that a probe would be held into the charges of demanding money leveled against the cops by the kin of the deceased.
