Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today said lack of unified regulation in the telecom sector was an issue that needed to be addressed.

"The regulations in the telecom sector, despite the existence of a body, is not centralised in the regulatory body...It is spread across the domain of regulator, Government and some other entities. There should be unified regulation," Ravi Kant, member, TRAI said while addressing an Inter-Pacific Bar Association Conference here.

Stating that it was not just enough to have a unified converged body or convergence of players, Kant said that key to realising objectives of telecom development lay in "convergence of mindsets."

Later while replying to a query on introduction of more players in the cellular arena, Kant said that issues of spectrum would have to be addressed before allowing additional players.

Speaking on the occasion Akhil Gupta, Managing Director of Bharti Group said that the niche players in the industry would need to come together, for addressing a bigger telecom footprint, which would enable a "right costing".
