Six assistant returning officers (AROS) on Monday left Aizawl for Bru refugee camps in north Tripura to issue postal ballots for 4,266 Bru voters so as to enable them to exercise franchise for the coming Lok Sabha polls to be held on April 20.

Election officials told PTI that the six AROs were sent to six Bru refugee camps in Tripura - Naisingpara, Asapara, Hazarchhora, Hamsapara, Kaiskau and Khakchangpara - under police escort.

Lalmalsawma, the state Chief Electoral Officer told PTI that the election officials were sent to Tripura refugee camps as per instructions from the Election Commission.

''They would give out application forms for postal ballots and would identify on the spot who were included in the state voters' list,'' Lalmalsawma said.

Earlier, the Brus, lodged in the refugee camps, exercised franchise at two special polling booths in the Mizoram-Tripura border in the last state assembly polls held on November 20, 2003.

Meanwhile, the Mizo Students' Union (MSU) leaders took strong exception to the move by the Election Department in trying to enable the Brus to vote in the Lok Sabha polls.

''We could not prevent them from going to Tripura as they left the state without our knowledge,'' the MSU leaders said.
