Actress-politician Smriti Irani will now be making her movie debut in a Bengali film, Amrita
, opposite actor Victor Bannerjee. Sources say that the film is yet to go on the floors but the actress has given the maker a go-ahead and even allotted her dates for the film.
When asked to comment, she confirmed that she was doing the film and would be playing the female lead. “My character’s name is Amrita. The film revolves around her. It’s too early to comment on the story and look of the film or my character in detail. Soon, the team will announce it formally,” she says. In good company
Irani, who is currently seen as Maniben in Maniben.com
on SAB TV
, says that she agreed to do the film mainly because of the script as well as an opportunity to work with Victor Bannerjee.
“I’ve seen Victor’s work in the past. He’s an excellent actor. My co-actress in the film is Supriya Devi, the late actor Uttam Kumar’s wife. I thought of this as a great opportunity to play the leading lady of a meaningful film,” asserts Irani.
She claims to be one of the few actresses to work in multi-lingual films simultaneously. “It’s fun to dabble in three
different languages. I have one comedy soap in Hindi, which is a daily. Thankfully, it’s doing well on the ratings chart. I’m doing Muktidhaam
, a Gujarati play which has been running to packed houses across the country, even after
completing 50-60 shows. And now, I have a Bengali film. I’m looking forward to it,” gushes the actress and national secretary of BJP. Past forward
Back in 2008, Smriti Irani was expected to make a foray into Hindi films with Maalik Ek
, a devotional film based on the life of Sai Baba. Besides a pivotal role in the film, she was also expected to be the sutradar (narrator). Kishori Shahane and her husband Deepak Balraj Vij were anchoring the project.
Irani was supposed to personify the mosque, Dwarka Mai, where the saint had lived for many years. Jackie Shroff was to play the title role. The supporting cast included Divya Dutta, Rajeshwari Sachdeva, Zareena Wahab and Sudesh Berry with Shakti Kapoor playing the villain.
The music was composed by Anup Jalota and songs rendered by Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhas, Ghulam Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal. We heard that the film was supposed to release in the latter part of 2008 but there’s been no news on that front.
Given that Irani was only doing the voice-over and a few frames in Maalik Ek
is expected to be her full-length debut role.
