It might take long to bring them to justice but most criminals here finally do get caught. Aruna Joshi, 42, who collaborated with her lover Manoj Mistry, 36, for killing Tahir Butt called the curry king, finally got what the two lovers deserved on Monday.
Mistry's brother Milan was sentenced last year when the jury gave a verdict of murder. But the panel had then failed to reach any decision on Mistry and Aruna.
The killing of Butt dates back to 1999 when his burnt body was found in his charred Mitsubishi. The police investigation followed and the two were questioned. But they told the officials that Butt, who lived in Harrow, had been caught in a drug war. It was also suggested by them that trade jealousy could have led to his murder.
It was true that Butt's restaurant, The Karahi Queen restaurant on Wembley High Street, was indeed very popular and was always full of diners. He also organised and promoted music concerts and dance performances. The police detectives had probed into the possibility of Butt having got involved in a dispute over some dancing girls brought here from the subcontinent.
The truth came out after a long investigation. According to sources, the Joshis came to London from India in 1985. Their marriage was a happy one until Joshi became mentally sick. He could not work. His wife then got involved with Butt. A few years later she got into an intimate relationship with Manoj Mistry, a mechanic by profession.
It is alleged that Joshi persuaded Manoj and his brother Milan to dispose off Butt. She called Butt to her house where he was thrashed severely by the two brothers and then strangled. They dumped Butt's body into his car and drove him to Hertfordshire where they torched it. The police found that Joshi gave almost £4000 to Manoj to buy a house back home, in India. She then sold her Wembley house and moved to Gujarat to join her lover.
When the two came to the UK, the Mistrys were arrested in April 2002. Joshi was arrested in August the same year. Now the court is set to announce their sentences.
