Even as the Kolkata Municipal Corporation attributed the city's waterlogged streets to the failure of the West Bengal irrigation department in desilting drainage canals, the latter said the problem lay in the lack of coordination among the agencies working on the canals.

Refuting KMC's charges, Irrigation Minister Amalendra Roy told newsmen that his department had removed the obstacles in all the drainage canals in and around the metropolis.

Pointing out that the Metro Railway and some other organisations were carrying out construction work on and along Tolly's Nullah, Roy said that the agencies entrusted with keeping the canals clear were not coordinating among themselves causing obstructions on the canals.

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee and KMC Mayor-in-Council (Drainage) Mala Roy have gone on record blaming the irrigation department for not desilting the drainage canals.
