It would be hard to come across someone who hasn’t heard of or played the thrilling game of Cluedo. Now, Mumbai-based theatre company Verité Theatre Productions is all set to bring the popular murder mystery game on stage on June 21.
Murder At Boddy Manor (Clue), the play is an adaptation of the game. Here, the audience has as important a role as the actors on stage. “We were looking for a new concept and didn't want to stage a play with a social message or a fairy tale. We also wanted to involve the audience. During a game night with friends, we decided to stage a board game,” says Saloni Shukla, director, Clue.
The story unfolds with a set of live musical performances. However, the course of the play will be decided with the help of the cards drawn by audience members, so each performance will have a different ending. Talking about the spontaneity involved, Shukla says, “We haven’t written 216 different endings, but we have rehearsed the last scene with each suspect. Depending on what cards have been drawn, the actors will improvise in the last scene. Even the actors playing the suspects will be unaware of the ending. It will be challenging for them, but fun as well.”
Murder At Boddy Manor will be staged on June 21 and 22, at Prithvi Theatre, Juhu, at 11 am.
At the beginning of the game, three audience members get on stage and pull out cards that determine the suspect and the weapon involved in the murder. As the play progresses, actors reveal different clues. After each one is read out, house lights come on and the audience marks it on a clue sheet given to them. At the end of the play, the cards will be revealed and the names of audience members who identified the right suspect and weapon will be announced.
