January 30th marks the 103rd birth anniversary of Amrita Sher-Gil, one of the most important modernist Indian painters of the 20th century. Search engine Google has paid tributes to the painter with one of her paintings ‘Three Girls’ as the doodle on Saturday.
The doodle is visible on the Google homepages in India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Iceland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia and Lithunia. A click on the doodle directs to Amrita’s wikipedia page.
Amrita Sher-Gil was born on January 30, 1913 to a Punjabi Sikh father and a Hungarian Jewish mother in Budapest, Hungary. She died at a young age of 28 (on December 5, 1941) in Lahore. She is considered among the most important Indian painters of the 20th century with 174 documented works created over the course of her brief career.
