For theatre lovers, 2014 seems to hold great promise, with international productions staging their works for the first time in the city. Earlier this month, we witnessed two productions acclaimed at the Edinburgh Fringe making their way to the city. Following suit is the US-based theatre company, B Street Theater’s version of Michael Brown’s Around The World In 80 Days. The play is based on Jules Verne’s literary magnum opus of the same name.

Directed by Michael Evan Haney, Around The World… will feature 39 characters, enacted by five actors over two entertaining hours. “The drama has very high energy, and it is a comedy with a heart. Our five actors are playing 39 characters in over 20 locations. The act calls for swift costume changes and efforts to represent different locations. Our protagonist, Phileas Fogg’s journey commences in England and takes him from London to the Suez Canal, followed by India, Hong Kong, USA and back to England,” says Haney.

With minimal props and two sound designers, the play is loaded with a bit of everything — from action and comedy, to romance and music. “I’ve been to several plays in Mumbai and find the audiences as sophisticated and learned as viewers anywhere else. They get irony and satire, which, for this show, are the most important characteristics in an audience,” adds Haney.

The play will be staged on February 21, at NCPA, Nariman Point, from 7.30 pm.
