Films, quizzes, rock concert and more...Here’s how you can be a part of the Earth Day Celebrations, an event marked world over

In an attempt to save mother earth, and with the idea to promote awareness and education to save our planet from various man made evils — like pollution, global warming, deforestation and more, Earth Day is being celebrated today. First conceptualised at the 1969 UNESCO Conference in San Fransisco, the date, April 22, was formally adopted three years ago by the United Nations. Delhi, the national Capital of India, is also observing this special event with much gusto. Lets take a look at some of events that the city has planned which are attracting all the attention.

Keeping up with the spirit of Earth day, The American centre in collaboration with Cinedarbaar is organising a four day action oriented program to generate awareness about the climate. One can witness a plethora of educational and entertainment based activities in order to remind us that we can co-exist in an eco-friendly environment. We are indebted to our forefathers to have provided us with this planet and it is our responsibility to preserve it. Vimlendu Jha, Founder and Director of SWECCHA will be answering questions about the environment for a live audience.

The spectacular gala will also include film screenings, quizzes, a music concert, a puppet-making and an art-music-imaging workshop. Eco-friendly products will be put on display and will be available for purchase.

Green activities with a cultural twist
To make Earth Day celebrations interesting, Select Citywalk Mall is organising an event called ‘Tomorrow’s Earth is Today’s Responsibility’. The line-up of activities include a flash mob, candle holding and slogan contests organised by IEEE to spread awareness about the environment. “We strongly believe that if we do not take necessary steps to protect the mother nature now then it is a matter of time that it will become a necessity and finally we will be heading towards a future that doesn’t exist,” says Arjun Sharma, director of Select Citywalk. There will be an exclusive art installation done by artist Arun Verma, which is made out of 200kg of old rusting scraps. The show will end with a dance performance by Shiamak Davar’s dance group.

Walk to work — Help the environment
On this Earth Day, walk to your office instead of driving. Several IT and BPO companies in Gurgaon have pledged to the campaign of using public transport for commuting to their office and over 40 companies will be participating in a walk as part of this campaign on April 22 at several places in Gurgaon.
“The idea is to draw attention to simple fixes like Metro shuttle service, road and pavement repair to help make a change and reduce the impact on the environment,” says Manas Fuloria of NASSCOMM which is spearheading this campaign. The Walk will happen at 8.45am at three locations in Gurgaon, namely Sikandarpur to Cybercity, towards Udyog Vihar and from Huda City Centre
to Unitech Cyber Park.
