Capital based potter Rahul Kumar's pots in red clay and Milan-based Luisa Cevesa's bags and table accessories, incorporating sari fabrics sourced from villages, will feature in the indigenous- ethnic section of Sotheby's forthcoming auction titled, Inspired by India.
The collection will offer contemporary designs, photographs, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and furniture from May 8 to 15, in London.
The showcase-auction will also feature designers such as Alice Cicolini and Sabyasachi Mukherjee and upcoming artists like Els Woldhek and Pia Wustenberg. Commenting on Inspired by India, curator Janice Blackburn says, “The crafts in India - weaving, embroidery, metal work and enamelling, are disappearing. The way to preserve these is to move them forward with products that combine traditional skills in a contemporary way, without sacrificing historical context.”
