It is not every day that one comes across a theatre group which prides itself on pushing the limits of reason in search of new experiences, making Epic Shit Entertainment (ESE) a company to watch out for. Founded by 22-year-old actor/director Madhav MadMan Mehta, ESE’s first production, Kasturba Panda Ki Pantie, opens today and seems nothing short of interesting.
A one man show, the play follows the life of Kasturba — a frustrated wife of a failed businessman Ranjan, who realises that he must let out the guest room of his apartment to recover his monetary losses. He puts the room on rent but fails to attract tenants, until the day when Bollywood’s bad-boy Salman Khan makes an appearance at their local Diwali mela. Kasturba, being a huge Sallu fan, rushes to the spot to catch a glimpse of the superstar and as she stretches to get a view of the man, her petticoat and pantie slip off.
What follows is utter chaos. “I’ve always found solo-performances very intriguing. I hope the audience enjoys the finished product as much as I have enjoyed bringing Kasturba to life,” says Mehta, who has also scripted the play. As to what inspired him to come up with the story, Mehta says, “I had read an old script by actor Steve Martin once, called The Underpants. The story and the name stuck with me and eventually led me to write this one.”
Ask 25-year-old actor Farhad KingBawa Colabawala if it was tough switching between all the characters and playing a woman, he says, “Doing this play has been challenging but a very enriching experience. It has helped me evolve as an actor. It’ll be a new and exciting experience for the audience.”
