Every year around August 15, kite makers in the Capital compete with each other to come up with different and innovative designs for their kites. This year is no different, as you will be able to see kites in the shapes of butterflies, eagles, owls, among other designs in the sky. To get a look at such kites, we took a walk at the Lal Kuan area of Old Delhi, known as the biggest wholesale market for kites. From oversized kites to ones measuring only one inch, this market has all sorts of kites.

A big hit this year are the Bollywood kites, which feature movies such as Dhoom 3, Ek Tha Tiger, Dirty Picture, Agneepath, Agent Vinod (Rs.5 each), and other flicks. For comic book fans, there is a Batman kite (Rs.10). “Apart from the Ooh La la kites, Dhoom 3 kites are the hot sellers. We sell about 20-30 pieces of each,” says the shopkeeper at Pappu Ji Patang Waale. Also popular here are the Chinese kites made of rexin. These don’t wither away and come in interesting shapes such as a bird, airplane and butterfly.

An interesting terminology that we came across here was related to the size of the kites, the largest being called ‘Akka’ and the smallest, ‘Pauna’. “The standard size used is the majola, which is medium-sized,” says the shopkeeper at Shabbir Bhai Patang Wala. One of the oldest sellers in this market is Kallu Bhai Patang Wale. A word of caution: Kallu Bhai is no more, so every shopkeeper may claim to be his successor.
