As an economic activity, handlooms occupy a second place only to agriculture in providing employment and livelihood. Tradition of weaving by hand is part of country’s cultural ethos and is unparalleled in its flexibility and versatility, permitting experimentation and encouraging innovation.
Textile weaves and prints like bandhani or tie-and-dye, leheriya, batik block-printing, ikats, metal-thread brocades, paithanis, chanderi, maheshwari, jamdani, kota, kanjeevarams and dharmavarams and the gadwal sarees of Andhra Pradesh.
