Nandita Das's directorial debut play in the capital
Actor Nandita Das’s play Between the Lines deals with a couple trying to cope with urban pressures. Actor Nandita Das debuts as a theatre director with the play, and her entrepreneur-hubby Subodh Maskara debuts as an actor.
Seems like the power tussle between men and women will never see an end. While the traditional roles played by the genders have undergone a sea change in the urban setup, the relationship is still fraught with complications. Exploring this theme is a new play in town — Between the Lines.
Actor Nandita Das debuts as a theatre director with the play, and her entrepreneur-hubby Subodh Maskara debuts as an actor. Talking about her inspiration for the play, Das says, “The idea came from a ’60s film, which was adapted for theatre by Purushottam Agarwal, an academician and writer. When I chanced upon the script, I felt it had the potential to be a powerful and engaging play.”
And, how did Subodh come into the picture? “Subodh has always been good with narrating stories and has a natural flair for acting. He’s been an inherent part of our writing journey as well, and feels close to the script and his character,” says Das.
Presented by Oxfam India and Chhoti Productions, the play is set in an urban milieu, where Maya and Shekhar, a lawyer-couple, are thrown in a dilemma when, one day, they accidentally end up being on opposite sides in a new case. How this case impacts their professional and personal lives, forms the rest of the play. Incidentally, the theme mirrors Das’s life off-stage. “Yes, the lines sometimes do get blurred. The husband-wife equation is different from a director-actor and actor-actor equation. But they overlap, and at times, run parallel. As a real life couple, it has been both easy and difficult to work together on such a subject. Many of our own conversations and discussions are part of the script,” says Das.
