An agency of the United Nations, UN Women, strives to maintain gender equality and works towards women’s empowerment. With the recent rise in crimes against women, the organisation has decided to lend support to the cause in an unconventional way. The group is organising a nationwide photography contest, which prompts the participants to depict what gender-related violence means to them.
The trigger for the competition seems to be the recent Delhi rape case. UN Women believes that since the case is fresh in everyone’s mind, the response to the contest will be more powerful.
“The Delhi gang-rape case is a very raw subject. As the nation ponders how an incident like this occurred, we are hopeful that now is the time to take action to minimise the risk of such events in the future. It’s an ideal time to give the youth an outlet to express their voice,” says Anne Stenhammer, UN Women representative for India.
The contest, which has begun already, allows each individual to submit a maximum of three photographs. Each photograph should be accompanied by a hundred word description, which should also include the details of the photograph. “Each entrant also submits a caption that gives context to the photo. From the inputs we have received so far, there are some very powerful entries,” adds Stenhammer.
