If you are an art lover who is impressed by abstracts and landscapes, Kabeer Lal’s first exhibition of photography in India might be of your interest. Titled, One, the exhibition aims to make the viewer identify with the subject of the picture. “It is a state of mind that I experience when I am clicking and want to pass on to my viewers,” says the photographer.
What sets Lal’s photographs apart is their artistic nature. “I like to do artistic or impressionist photography, which is called photo-art. If you go to the same place where the photograph was shot, you might see a different view than what you see in my picture,” he says.
Lal’s passion for photography is clearly visible in the huge 30 prints. Selective re-colouration, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and photo-merge are some of the techniques Lal has used effectively to give a unique identity to his photographs. His range of natural shades comes out very strong in the photograph titled, Sunset, thanks to HDR technique.
While maintaining his individual streak, Lal is very much against tampering with the natural surroundings, getting someone to pose or adding an object artificially to the picture. “I like to work with the natural surroundings and enhance their effect or click from a certain angle, so that it depicts a different idea,” says Lal. So, each of his photographs is essentially a work of art depicting an idea or a story.
Clicking it right
Lal also runs a photography club called Photopositive Photography, where he conducts photo-walks and guided shoots free of cost. His club gets together a group of photo-enthusiasts every alternate weekend to capture the city on camera. Architectural, portrait and abstract photography are some of the forms explored during the walks. An enthusiasm for clicking and a basic Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera is the only requirement for this club.
Lal also conducts workshops under the ‘Photomagination’ initiative for those who want to take the art of clicking pictures seriously. According to Lal, this initiative stirs up the creativity of the participants and helps them to understand basics like how to click manual pictures with different lighting and compositions instead of just using the automatic button.
