The hip hop way of dancing might be very popular in the West, but it has got a sold fan base in India as well, especially in the Capital. As a result, there are a number of institutes that are coming up in the city which offer hip hop classes. So, if you want to learn how to pop it and lock it this summer, you can enroll in any one of these institutes.

What is Hip Hop?
Hip-hop refers to dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or evolved as part of the hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles, notably breaking, locking, and popping, which were created in the 1970s. Hip hop has developed from several cultures, including jazz, rock, tap and American and Latino cultures. The dance genre has a newly-found fan following in India, with many dance groups adopting it.

I Dance

I DanceFounded in 2006, this institute, which is located in Gautam Nagar, has become quite popular among youngsters. Students of this institute get a lot of opportunities to be a part of big shows that are choreographed by the trainers here.



They teach hip hop dance, mainly the form called general hip-hop and other dance forms such as street salsa, rock n roll, and ballroom dance, to name a few. According to Jose Varghese, the owner of I Dance, "People prefer our dance institute because we offer convenient timings and enrollments that allow our students to take lessons in any of our dance studios."

Delhi Is Dancing
You can only enroll for the hip-hop class here if you are 14 years of age or more. “Hip hop is a complicated dance form and that is why we don’t take children below 14, as it’s difficult for them to learn it,” says Manish Gupta, a trainer at the institute who has trained under dance choreographers Kenzo and Ashley Lobo and was also one of the contestants on the TV show Dance India Dance.

This institute specialises in teaching B-boying and general hip-hop. The institute keeps sending their students to various dance competitions to accustom them to stage performances. Apart from teaching hip-hop, the institute also teaches other dance forms such as Bollywood contemporary and jazz.

Dance Trix

Dance TrixThis institute, located in West Delhi, teaches house hip-hop, old school and new school hip hop and lyrical hip hop. People from 13 to 45 years participate in these classes. Dance Trix even has a wooden floor, which most of the institutes don’t provide.



The instructors here include Varun Mishra, who was one of the contestants of the TV show Just dance, Narendra, who was a contestant on the show Dance India Dance, and Sonu Raj, who has worked under dance choreographer Remo D’Souza.

Zenith Dance Institute
This institute has 22 centres in Delhi and Mumbai. Here, the minimum age requirement for a student is above four. Sneha Gupta, who was one of the top eight contestants on the TV show Dance India Dance, is one of the trainers teaching hip-hop here.

The institute provides a good exposure to its students by providing them with an opportunity to participate in events such as Indian Premier League, various launches and other events.

Delhi Dance Academy

DelhiThis institute, located in Lajpat Nagar, teaches authentic western and modern Indian dance forms to its students. The institute has three trainers dedicated to teaching hip hop, who also teach other forms of this dance form, such as, popping, locking and B-boying. The Delhi Dance Academy holds classes both in the afternoon and in the evening.



You will usually see school and college students enrolling for these classes. Apart from hip hop, the institute also teaches other dance forms like jazz, salsa and aerobics.
