Driving on the streets is passé. Try some Zumba moves, Aerobics and live art on the streets of the city today

If you thought that the city’s streets were only for the ever-growing population of cars, then you haven’t yet checked on the latest trend. Well, how about learning Zumba, or attending a session of yoga or aerobics on the streets?

A group in Gurgaon is organising a host of on-the-road events, and calling it Raahgiri Day, with an effort to reclaim the streets. “In these days of high pollution and traffic, the youth have almost forgotten the fun of skating or playing on the streets without the fear of being hit by a car. We want to re-introduce the youth to the joys of open space,” says Prabhat Aggarwal, a member of the group. And what’s more, the organisers are more than open to include even first timers. “Don’t worry if you don’t own a pair of skates, you can rent them on the spot,” says Sarika Bhatt, one of the organisers.

Starting from 7am today, a stretch in Sector 27, Gurgaon will be dedicated to not just walkers, but there will also be live music by city-based bands like Sattva, street art by Udaan and a drum circle by Delhi Drummers, to add to the celebrations.

Inspired by Cyclovia — an initiative started in Bogota 1974, the 12-week campaign starting today, will involve dedicating a 10-kilometre stretch on the streets of Gurgaon for non-motorised activities. “Most international cities have dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians. But despite Gurgaon being touted as the millennium city, there are no facilities for pedestrians. RaahGiri is about taking charge of our own journey, of our own streets, of our lives,” adds Bhatt, member of Non-Motorised Transport (NMT), that is organising the event.

More than a 1000 students are expected to take to the streets of Gurgaon today, and the event is open to people of all age-groups.
