It happens quite often. You manage to convince a friend to watch the most inane Bollywood movie, but can’t get someone to accompany you to a fabulous play that has premiered in the city to rave reviews. That’s when you stop pulling out your hair and check out the Facebook group, It’s Showtime. Launched in May this year, it caters to theatre enthusiasts in the city, helping them come together to catch plays with like-minded individuals.
“I have always been fond of theatre, but not many people are into it. So this group helps you connect with those who are,” says Salonee Sanghvi, 29, an equity analyst, who founded the group only because she is a huge fan of theatre. The Facebook group currently has 210 fans, including actors and production hands from various theatre groups in the city, like Akvarious, Silly Point, Balancing Act and Ace Productions. They’ve had eight shows till date, the last being Shorter + Sweeter at the Comedy Store.
To join, you either need to know someone in the group or send an email to Sanghvi. This is just a combing process to ensure a genuine interest in theatre. The groups meet once every three weeks to catch plays at the Prithvi Theatre, Comedy Store or NCPA. “We keep the groups small, so that people can interact with one another. Only 15-30 people watch a play at one go. After that we go out for dinner or drinks to discuss it,” says Sanghvi. The play is chosen after a democratic voting process by the group. People can buy tickets to the play selected themselves or get Sanghvi to buy it for them.
The next outing takes place in the second week of January, but the play is as yet undecided. “We are also looking to have sessions with theatre folk or meet actors backstage after a play. But that is a work-in-progress,” says Sanghvi.
