Celebrated Indian artists MF Husain passed away on June 9, 2011. He was 95.

The eventful life of India’s celebrated painter, late MF Husain, will soon be made into a film. The project is helmed by Barkha Roy, Bollywood actor Reena Roy’s sister. Presently being shot in Husain’s birthplace Pandharpur (Maharashtra), it will be completed soon.

“I was always inspired by his (Husain’s) works. I first met him in a bank in Bandra in 2005. Over the years, we became good friends. At that time, I had told him that I wanted to do something on his life, but nothing materialised for many years,” says Roy, who even claims to have been gifted a portrait of herself by Husain. The painter had lived the last few years of his life in self-exile in Qatar and Britain.

The one-hour-and-10-minute-long film is being shot as a documentary. It even features an actor playing Husain. “It is a docu-feature in English. I auditioned more than 100 people for the role.” The film is scheduled for an October release in theatres and international film festivals. It will feature friends of Husain from the Indian art fraternity, including artists SH Raza, Ram Kumar, Krishen Khanna, Jatin Das and beauty expert Shahnaz Husain. “They have shared such information about him that no one knows till date. You won’t find all this material on Google or any other source.”

Barkha’s most notable work so far has been the Bollywood film Sanam Teri Kasam (1982) that she had produced.
