One thing you can be sure of when you pick author Nishat Fatima’s first book— Seriously, Sitara — is that it won’t disappoint you. A brilliant narrative with a quirky plot, it is rare that a book which, although bordering on the genre of a chick-lit, keeps you hooked from the moment you say the word go.
Fatima’s novel has all the elements one would want on a lazy Sunday afternoon with a cup of hot masala tea while romancing an overcast sky, or when one is looking for an escape from the mundane.
The story revolves around Sitara Gopalasundaram — a thirty-plus single arts editor working with a famous men’s magazine called Homme. And how her boss’ nefarious plans lead her into the arms of the man of every Indian woman’s dreams — famous Bollywood super-star Naseer Khan. Except that Sitara couldn’t care less. What starts with a meet-cute from hell, is followed by a series of run-ins with ex fiancés (both Sitara’s and Naseer’s), confrontations, complications, controversies, a trip to Tuscany and Florence, family drama (that’ll have you rolling on the futon laughing) and a climax straight out of a mushy movie.
Though the ending may not carry an element of surprise, the journey of all the characters in the book is extremely intriguing and nothing short of hilarious. Ask Fatima as to how this book came along and she says, “I started writing it as part of the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) sometime back.
After the 30-day long session, I sent it to a few people who encouraged me to take this book further.” She adds: “Something like this may not happen in real life, but this book is like watching a Bollywood movie.” Pure entertainment, we agree.
