Living in a time where marriage proposals on Skype and Facebook chats seem more viable than face-to-face meetings to so many people, it is safe to say that social media has transformed relationships. An award winning UK-based dance theatre company, Protein, will now elaborate on our dependence on the web as part of their India tour. Their show LOL — Lots Of Love, will be staged at the NCPA tonight (Friday), and will bring together comedy, dance, music and video animation in one powerful event.
LOL revolves around six characters, and their lives on Facebook. Luca Silvestrini, the artistic director of the troupe, says that the idea for this show struck him when he began to realise how people’s attitude and behaviour have changed with the development of social media. “It became clear to me that we were facing a big shift in terms of human communication, and I began to question the long-term consequences of this change on our everyday experiences,” he says.
This will be Protein’s debut performance in Mumbai, and Luca is obviously looking forward to see how the audience will react to such a unique format. Ask him how they manage to strike a balance between the many forms they use, and he says, “All the elements have equal importance and they blend and affect each other throughout the show. The right balance is found when you create the basis for dialogue and interaction between the different languages or elements you use.” He further adds, “We opened a couple of days ago in Chennai and receivedvery good reactions from the audience. But I am not expecting only a reaction, I want to do work that can provoke independent thought and spark a debate once the show is over.”
Catch the show tonight at the Experimental Theatre, NCPA, 7 pm. Tickets: Rs 400 and Rs 500.
