Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most renowned composers in the western classical music genres and has worked on some popular pieces in chamber music. Now, a  new play that premieres on September 22, will give theatre enthusiasts in the city a chance to know the legend better.

Titled Sounds of Silence, the recital will be a musical tribute to Beethoven and depicts a series of events from his life. A man with great talent, who was partially deaf till he turned 30, and completely deaf from then on, he successfully overcame the barrier of not being able to hear and presented some of his best works in his symphonies.

Poonam Sareen, who has directed the play, says, “Beethoven’s life is a fairytale, where the villain is him being deaf while his divine music plays the superhero. Self-belief and faith in the fact that he is larger than his body makes him relatable as a subject to all of us.”

The play will be staged on September 22, 29 and October 6, and features Sandeep Prabhakar, Neha Sareen, Gurinder Pawar, Sonali Chhabria, Archana Pania and Ashish Thadani, among others.

Talking about his experience of playing Beethoven, Prabhakar says, “Playing Beethoven was exhilarating and exhausting. The man was a creative genius and yet had trouble when it came to relationships. I could relate to the character before, but as the rehearsals progressed, I found myself delving deeper into the man.” Sounds of Silence will be staged on September 22, 29 and October 6, at St. Andrew’s Auditorium, Bandra (W), from 7.30 pm.
