The Election Commission issued a showcause notice to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee over the promise of the creation of a new district in violation of model code of conduct, poll panel chief Nasim Zaidi said.
“The Commission has issued a showcause notice to her,” the Chief Election Commissioner said at a press conference in Kolkata.
“It was brought to our knowledge that she made the promise of creation of a new district of Asansol after which a detailed showcause notice was sent to her,” he said.
“She also made some other utterances which violated the model code of conduct,” he said.
“Upon receiving reply from Banerjee, the future course of action will be decided,” he said.
An unfazed Banerjee, however, dared the commission and said, “Do whatever you like”.
“I heard that election commission has showcaused me. What I have said I will say it again, I will say it thousand times.
“I will say it a lakh times. Do whatever you like. If anyone spread canards against me I will seek answers,” the Trinamool Congress leader said at election meeting in Birbhum district.
Earlier, an FIR was registered against Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi for violating electoral laws by holding a press conference when voting was on.
