Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s joint road show in Varanasi on February 11 has been postponed. The decision, UP Congress Committee spokesperson Satish Rai said, was to avoid causing inconvenience to a large number of people gathered in the area to attend the birth anniversary celebrations of the medieval Dalit poet-saint Sant Ravidas in Seer Goverdhanpur.
Rai said that the new date for the road show would be announced soon.
A senior Congress leader said the road show is most likely on February 17 after the local Congress unit’s proposal.
Ravidas Jayanti is being celebrated on Friday. A huge fair is organised every year to mark the birth anniversary celebrations, which are attended by the followers of the Dalit saint at the Sant Ravidas temple. Known as Ravidasias, the followers, most of whom are from Punjab, will start going back on Saturday.
Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid obeisance at Sant Ravidas temple. He also had prasada at the langar (feast) in the temple.
