Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam’s chief minister designate Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday stepped down as the Union sports minister in the Modi cabinet to head home for his new job, with the state’s governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya inviting the victorious BJP-led alliance to form the next government.
The 53-year-old’s resignation letter was sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Pranab Mukherjee, who accepted it.
“The President, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Sarbananda Sonowal, minister of state (independent charge) of ministry of youth affairs and sports, from the council of ministers, with immediate effect,” a Rashtrapati Bhawan communiqué said.
Sonowal was elected BJP legislature party leader at a meeting of the newly-elected MLAs in Guwahati on Sunday afternoon. He had begun his political career with the All Assam Students Union before moving to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and later to the BJP in 2011.
